PrEP for Trans Women

All the information on this site is for all women, cis and trans.

This page gives a bit more detail specific to trans women.

PrEP is highly effective for trans women when taken as prescribed.

  • We recommend daily PrEP (including holiday PrEP) for all trans people using hormone treatment as we don’t have sufficient data to support other dosing options.

  • A minimum of six pills per week is required for adequate protection for vaginal or frontal sex.

  • If you have receptive anal sex only, there are other dosing options available to you.

Does PrEP interact with hormone medication?

British HIV Association (BHIVA) guidelines state there are no known interactions between PrEP and feminising or masculinising hormones, except for ethinylestradiol (a hormone which is no longer recommended as part of gender affirming therapy).

Stopping PrEP temporarily or permanently ?

You can decide to stop taking PrEP whenever you want. But don’t stop taking the pills on the day you decide.

You need to keep taking your daily dose for 7 days after your last risk of exposure to HIV – for example, condomless sex.

Trans and non binary people can access PrEP from:
