Can I get PrEP on the NHS? Yes!

PrEP is provided for free as part of NHS specialist services in all level three sexual health clinics in England, Scotland and Wales.

Criteria for access via the NHS

You need to be over 16 and match one or more of these descriptions:

You’re HIV negative and have had condomless sex in the past three months and think you will again in the next three months, and you are a: cis or transgender MSM or transgender woman.

You’re HIV negative and expect to have sex without condoms with an HIV positive partner/s with a detectable viral load.

You don’t meet the first two descriptions and you might be having heterosexual sex, but you’ve been clinically assessed as being at a similar high risk of becoming HIV positive.

Each consultation is individually tailored to meet your need, if you self-identify as being at risk, or not sure, then contact your local sexual health clinic and make an appointment.

At your first appointment you will be offered a full sexual health screen including an HIV test and a kidney function test. You need to be HIV negative to take PrEP.

In Northern Ireland, all sexual health clinics offer initial consultation and assessment appointments. Eligible individuals will be referred to a centralised service in Belfast or Derry/Londonderry.

Buying your own PrEP - Online Access

It is possible, and legal, to order generic PrEP drugs online from pharmacies in different countries and have it delivered to you in the UK. Many people have done this over the last few years, when PrEP has not been available on the NHS. Doctors at a London HIV clinic tested samples of generic drugs people had imported, and found that they were genuine drugs.

If you think this might be a good option for you, please see https://www.iwantprepnow.co.uk/ which is a website that provides information and support for importing generic PrEP.
